A Spark of Hope: Philanthropy and Economic Inclusion with Ash McNeely

Our newest board member, Ash McNeely, a seasoned foundation leader and advocate for economic empowerment, has dedicated her career to bridging the gap between community needs and available resources.

McNeely has been championing the nonprofit sector for decades, working with a variety of organizations and foundations, primarily in Silicon Valley. Her experience with philanthropic families and nonprofits has exposed her to both the immense wealth and stark inequalities that exist in the region.

Inspired by her wife’s grandparents’ immigrant story of entrepreneurship, McNeely understands the power of economic security to transform lives and create generational wealth. She reflects, “I’ve seen how, over multiple generations, the family wealth has been able to accumulate because of small business ownership in this country.” McNeely views organizations like MAF as beacons of hope, proving that financial stability is still attainable for everyone with enough resources and support.

A Holistic Approach to Philanthropy

McNeely’s approach to philanthropy is both strategic and compassionate. She believes in starting with the needs of the community, listening to the voices of those most impacted, and partnering with organizations that are truly client-focused. As she puts it, “Mission Asset Fund is a great example of an organization that has always been extremely end-user focused, and really drives its programming and services from that perspective.”

She emphasizes the importance of funders providing grantees with what they truly need to succeed, whether it’s capacity building, new program development, or flexible unrestricted support. This holistic approach ensures that philanthropic dollars have the maximum impact and creates a virtuous cycle of positive change.

Why Economic Security Matters

For McNeely, economic security is not just a financial goal. She’s witnessed firsthand how financial instability can lead to anxiety, stress, and missed opportunities.

“I think it’s an essential ingredient for human well-being,” McNeely states. “The level of anxiety that comes with economic insecurity is so extreme, and can cloud the ability to problem solve or find joy in the moments.” By supporting organizations like MAF, McNeely is investing in the future of marginalized communities, helping individuals build assets, access credit, and achieve their dreams. She believes the ripple effect of economic support can transform families, neighborhoods, and entire communities.

A Spark of Hope

In a time when economic inequality is consistently growing, McNeely sees her work with MAF as a spark of hope. Opportunity and growth can happen when families who are pushed to the margins are heard, understood, and have access to financial products that serve them in the context of their lives.
