Building Dreams in Coachella: How Monthly Cash Assistance is Transforming Lives

In the heart of Coachella Valley, where the summer heat is as constant as the community’s resilience, a transformative program is helping immigrant families rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. The Coachella Immigrant Families Recovery Program (IFRP), a partnership between Mission Asset Fund (MAF) and the City of Coachella, is providing much-needed support to 140 local families through monthly cash assistance.

Breaking New Ground in Community Support

The program, which launched in October 2022, provides monthly cash assistance of $400 to participating families for either 12 or 24 months. This innovative partnership marks the City of Coachella’s first guaranteed income program, demonstrating its commitment to supporting immigrant families who were excluded from federal pandemic relief. By combining MAF’s expertise in providing dignified financial services with the City of Coachella’s deep community connections, the program creates a powerful model for how local governments can effectively support immigrant communities in their post-pandemic recovery.

From Skepticism to Success: Real Stories of Change

We had the opportunity to connect with two program participants, Guadalupe and Veronica, who graciously shared their experiences with the Coachella IFRP. Their stories offer a window into how this program is making a real difference in the lives of immigrant families in Coachella.

shares Guadalupe, a mother of four who works in the fields. Like many participants, she was initially skeptical about the program. “Is it true? It seemed unusual,” she recalls. But that skepticism turned to joy when she received her first deposit.

The program’s impact extends beyond immediate financial relief. For Guadalupe, another program participant, the monthly assistance helped cover housing costs during a difficult period when she wasn’t working due to COVID-19. “The money helped me a lot, a lot, a lot,” she emphasizes. The stability provided by the program allowed her to save some money for emergencies – a financial practice she continues today.

What makes this program unique, is its trust in families as experts in their own lives. Participants can use the funds however they choose, whether it’s paying down debt, buying necessities for their children, or creating memorable experiences for their families. Veronica shares how she used some funds to take her daughter to the pumpkin patch and have a picnic in the park – simple joys that were previously out of reach.

The program has sparked dreams of a better future. Guadalupe envisions opening her own business, while Veronica has already achieved a significant milestone – becoming a homeowner.

“More than anything, my daughters feel like they have their own home, their own space,” Guadalupe says with pride.

Perhaps most heartening is how the program has strengthened community bonds. “I think people are more united,” Guadalupe observes. “People want to help each other. I feel like it is like that now.” This spirit of solidarity shows how financial support can catalyze positive change beyond individual households.

As we look to the future, participants share common hopes for their community: better job opportunities, higher wages, and continued support for immigrant families. Their message to the City of Coachella echoes with gratitude and hope. As Veronica puts it, “If it was extended, it would help all of us achieve our dreams.”
