Deep Listening Builds Belonging

What does it really take to build credit and improve financial well-being? At MAF, credit building is about more than just paying bills on time, opening a bank account, or having a prime credit score. The journey starts with something deeper: belonging.

In the final installment of this three-part blog series on deep listening, Mario, MAF’s Client Success Coordinator, reflects on his experiences at MAF and how deep listening builds belonging, trust, and community.

Paying It Forward

Mario, who was a DreamSF fellow at MAF just a few years ago, knows the transformational power of deep listening and belonging firsthand. Before he joined the staff, he participated in one of MAF’s Lending Circles.

The program helped him boost his financial standing through credit repair. Now, he wants to help others improve their credit profile too. He says:

“I see every Monday as a new opportunity, intentionally bringing my best energy to work. It’s important that I have a positive mind, so that I can listen deeply to client concerns and make each one feel welcomed and safe. It was how the MAF team made me feel when I was a client.”

Belonging is a Dynamic Process

At MAF, we design our services and products based on the understanding that people don’t need to be taught how to be financially responsible. We know that they are already carefully managing their hard-earned money. What clients need is recognition, support, and a space that acknowledges their experiences. So, MAF intentionally invests in strengthening each client’s sense of belonging and approaches each client relationship with respect and dignity.

Belonging is more than a warm feeling—it’s a powerful foundation for helping people improve their financial lives. Belonging becomes a launchpad and force that propels progress.

When people feel valued, they feel motivated to participate. They take steps toward goals that may have once felt out of reach—whether it’s building their credit, starting a business, or dreaming bigger dreams.

No One Builds Alone

When clients come to MAF for the first time, they may lack a formal credit history. Sometimes, they don’t have a bank account at all. Many have never felt welcomed by mainstream providers of banking or financial services. So, MAF doesn’t just aim to increase access to the system. We strive to help clients feel like they belong in it.

For “Henry,” a MAF client and skilled handyman, the challenge in growing his business wasn’t just financial. Henry came to MAF before he had an EIN, a license for his business, or even a credit score. Still, after years of working informally as an entrepreneur, he wanted to turn his work into a formal business. But the process felt isolating and overburdensome.

So, Henry brought all his documentation to MAF and asked for help. He got financial coaching to help him make a plan to meet the licensing requirements and steadily build his credit. Moreover, he gained a community to help him navigate his journey of entrepreneurship.

“Everyone here at MAF knows Henry now,”  Mario shares, “it feels like for every milestone, he comes to our office and always keeps us informed.”

After repaying a business loan of $2,500 from MAF, Henry became credit visible with a credit score of just over 720. He was finally approved for a business credit card after having been turned away countless times before he came to MAF.

Then, Henry received another credit-building loan to pay for the fees required for his courses and certification as a contractor. The exam fees were more costly to Henry due to his immigration status, which meant that he had to pay a higher non-resident fee. Still, that didn’t stop Henry.

Mario recounted how “Henry came to MAF to tell us he passed one of his certification exams. He proudly showed everyone at the office a book of about 300 pages, and we eagerly listened to him describe how hard he had studied. We were all cheering him on.”

Belonging Means Having a Trusted Partner

What Henry found at MAF was much more than a loan and a financial coaching session. Through MAF, he found community in connecting with other entrepreneurs navigating similar journeys and receiving encouragement, relevant resources, and practical support. This sense of belonging meant he no longer navigated roadblocks or celebrated milestones in isolation.

When we start with deep listening, we build trust and foster a community where we can build together. Building a sense of belonging is essential to how MAF helps people take another step forward toward reaching their full financial potential. Progress isn’t about just one number or one person—it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself.

At MAF, we don’t just serve clients; we partner with them. That means making sure people feel seen, heard, and that they are part of a team supporting them along their journey. Deep listening is a core practice at MAF that helps us connect with each client to help them build bridges to their dreams.
