Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this the same Lending Circles program as MAF’s?
Yes. Every partner in our network runs the same Lending Circles program: zero-interest loans, credit reporting to all major bureaus, and the same standards of care. The only difference is that you’ll be working with a local nonprofit that knows your community.
- How are these partners vetted?
Every partner in our network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has gone through MAF’s training and certification process. They follow the same program standards we do — so you can expect the same quality of service no matter which partner you work with.
- What does it cost to participate?
Lending Circles are zero-interest; there are no fees or interest charges on the loan itself. Check with your local partner for details.
- Will participating affect my credit score?
Lending Circles reports monthly payments to all three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. For most participants, this results in a positive impact on their credit score over the course of the program.
For privacy reasons, you’ll need to start a new application directly with the partner organization. The good news: the process is similar to MAF’s, and most partners can get you started right away. Requirements vary slightly by partner, but most will ask for a government-issued ID, proof of income, and proof of address. Contact your local partner before your appointment so you can come prepared. No. Lending Circles welcomes participants regardless of immigration status. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is accepted in place of a Social Security Number.
We're continuing to grow our network across the country. If there's no partner near you right now, tell us your zip code and we'll email you when a partner opens near you. In the meantime, explore Lending Circles and other financial tools available to you. MAF serves participants primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you’re outside our direct service area, a partner organization is the best way to access Lending Circles near you. If you are in California and want to participate in a Lending Circle with MAF, start here. Yes! We’re always looking to grow our network. If your organization is a registered 501(c)(3) and serves a community that could benefit from Lending Circles, learn more about the certification process below.
